New Shuidiao Getou — A Traditional Kinmen Residence from the Guangxu Era

New Shuidiao Getou is a traditional Kinmen residence built during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty. After being carefully restored by Kinmen National Park, the historic house was entrusted to private management and transformed into a homestay, allowing its architecture and stories to continue as part of everyday life.

The Architecture — An “Eleven-Purlin House”

The timber roof structure of the house is known locally as an “Eleven-Purlin House” (十一架厝), traditionally referred to in Kinmen as Zhanbu (展步).

The main structure contains eleven horizontal timber members supporting the roof. The front and rear halls are connected through the structural framework on both sides, creating a larger and more substantial residence than many traditional Kinmen homes.

This architectural form reflects not only the craftsmanship of its time, but also the knowledge and practical wisdom accumulated through generations of traditional Minnan architecture.

“Kui Bi Lian Hui” — A Blessing for a Harmonious Union

Above the entrance is a plaque inscribed with the four Chinese characters:

奎璧聯輝 — Kui Bi Lian Hui

These four characters can also be found above the entrances of many historic houses in Kinmen.

Traditionally, the inscription was associated with a home built for newlyweds. Kui (奎) and Bi (璧) refer to two celestial constellations whose stars shine in harmony across the heavens.

Together, they symbolize an auspicious union — two people brought together by destiny, perfectly matched and shining together.

The inscription therefore carries a beautiful blessing for marriage, harmony, family, and a life built together.

Traditional Craftsmanship in Every Detail

The entrance corridor preserves many beautiful examples of traditional craftsmanship.

Its decorative brick carvings feature auspicious symbols and motifs expressing the hopes and wishes of the original owners. Other architectural details include traditional Qingdou stone door fittings, Quanzhou white-stone architectural elements, as well as century-old stone steps and stone paving that have been remarkably well preserved.

Inside the house are two elegant living rooms, where guests can enjoy breakfast, tea, conversation, or simply a quiet moment.

The courtyard, plants, and seasonal flowers bring softness and life to the historic architecture.

With its spacious layout and private atmosphere, the entire house is especially suitable for families or groups of friends who wish to reserve the whole property and enjoy a warm, intimate space of their own.

The Story Behind “New Shuidiao Getou”

The name New Shuidiao Getou (新水調歌頭) comes from Shuidiao Getou, the classical Chinese poetic form made famous by the Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo (Su Shi). The name also reflects the homestay’s location in Kinmen’s historic Shuitou area.

The seven guest rooms are named after poetic images from Su Dongpo’s celebrated Shuidiao Getou:

Mingyue (明月) — Bright Moon
Chanjuan (嬋娟) — Beautiful Moon
Qionglou (瓊樓) — Jade Tower
Zhuge (朱閣) — Vermilion Pavilion
Chengfeng (乘風) — Riding the Wind
Qiwu (起舞) — Dancing
Bajiu (把酒) — Raising a Cup

Four of the rooms feature loft spaces and can accommodate two to four guests each. The right wing of the house contains three double rooms.

Altogether, New Shuidiao Getou can accommodate approximately 14 to 22 guests, making it particularly suitable for families, groups of friends, and guests traveling together.

Where History Meets Modern Comfort

Although New Shuidiao Getou retains the simplicity, warmth, and character of a traditional Kinmen house, its guest rooms offer the cleanliness, brightness, and comfort expected of a modern homestay.

A small guest pantry is equipped with a coffee machine, drinking water, tea, Kinmen snacks, and Kinmen Kaoliang liquor.

Here, old and new exist naturally side by side.

The timber structure, brick carvings, stone steps, courtyard, and traces of more than a century of history remain part of the house, while comfortable modern facilities allow travelers to experience this heritage in an easy and welcoming way.

We hope that staying at New Shuidiao Getou is more than simply spending a night in Kinmen.

It is an opportunity to step inside a historic house, discover the craftsmanship and wisdom of traditional Minnan architecture, and experience the warmth and beauty of life within an old Kinmen home.
